Salar de Uyuni - Salt Flats - Bolivia

When you arrive to a foreign country for the very first time there are a number of different ways you could go about seeing it and feeling at home.

You could make friends in a bar, join some sort of classes or club or just wander around looking to soak up the atmosphere. These are all great methods and while some are right for some people others will be better for other travelers.

However, there is also a lot to be said for going on a road trip if you want to see a new country in the most exciting way possible. So what sort of special experiences does this type of trip give you?

See a Lot of the Country

It seems rather obvious to say that a road trip lets you see a lot of the country, doesn’t it? Well, even if it seems obvious it is still worth stating. Many travelers go to a new country and spend almost of all of their time in the capital or other big city .This can lead to a fantastic experience but wouldn’t you end up going home feeling that you hadn’t seen all that you wanted to? By hitting the open road you can see the smaller towns and the countryside as well. Maybe at the end of it you will want to head back to the big city but at least you will have seen plenty of other places as well. In some places, the countryside you can only explore in a car is the best part of the whole country and you might come across some outstanding photo opportunities.

Meet a Variety of People

A long road trip is also a fantastic opportunity to meet a bigger variety of locals than you probably would staying in a big city. Sure, the city might have a population of 3 million or 5 million of whatever. However, we are talking about the difference between city folk and rural dwellers here. In most of the countries you travel to you will find that out in the rural areas is where you find the friendliest and most welcoming but shiest residents. By getting behind the wheel and heading out to explore you will meet a huge variety of people who will enrich your experience and give you a better understanding of the country as a whole. This is especially true in huge countries in which the people can be very different in one region from in another.

Try Different Food and Drinks

As you sit back, turn up the radio and explore the country you will find that more than just the landscape and the faces change as you travel. The cuisine can also vary massively from one region to another. You will quite possibly come across a wide variety of food and drinks that simply aren’t available in the big cities. Alternatively, it might be that the cities offer a poor imitation of the food you try out on your road trip. A third possibility is that the cuisine is actually very similar all over the country but that the fact that you eat in what feels like a more authentic setting adds  a good deal to the overall impact it has on you. It can also help you to have a healthier diet on your trip too.

See the Real Country

What does seeing the real country mean? After all, this is what many travelers set out to do without ever thinking about how they will do it. In the context of a road trip in a foreign country it could mean seeing a traditional way of life and a unique culture. Many big cities over the globe tend to be similar in some respects these days and it is by getting out into the countryside that you stand the best chance of seeing something unique and authentic.
