Adventure in Argentina – Paragliding in Mendoza Argentina

Few countries in the world offer such stunning natural and climatic diversity as Argentina, the second-largest country, after Brazil, in South America and the eighth largest in the world.

With its dramatic glaciers in the south and subtropical jungles in the north, covering 2.8 million square kilometres through grassy pampas, barren deserts, outstanding mountain ranges and dipping into Antarctica, it is hardly surprising that Argentina is a magnet for adrenaline junkies. Whether you’re looking for adventure in the air, sea or on land, Argentina has it all.

White-water rafting over the turbulent waters of the famous Atuel Canyon in inflatable boats is a thrilling way to take in the stunning scenery.

Located in the Grande Valley, around 40 km from the city of Mendoza, surrounded by the 21,000 feet Aconcagua mountain range and in the heart of wine country, this is an unforgettable adrenaline-fuelled descent. Half-day rafting excursions in Mendoza cost from £100.

Snowboarding in the once volcanic region of Batea Mahuida, 370 km from Neuquén, is one of a wide range of thrilling winter sports available. The sport is as popular in Argentina as it is in the UK and Europe, with the Argentine mountains being a popular destination for devoted fans.

Combine practising your jumps and free falls with a day of snowmobiling, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in a forest of monkey puzzle trees! Argentina’s newest winter-sports resort Las Lenas is based in Mendoza province, with Bariloche’s purpose-built Cerro Catedral resort being the largest in South America. Head there between June and October for the best snow.

And if downhill skiing is just too passé, try your hand at extreme skiing, which involves descending a steep mountain using only your skis, away from the more popular tourist resorts.

Canopy offers a unique, ecologically friendly alternative for enthusiastic adventure seekers. It’s based in the forests of Andean Patagonia and you’ll find yourself jumping from platforms at the forest’s highest level.

An adventure park at Peñón del Águila offers the Eagle’s Flight canopy circuit. Hang and swing from harnesses and use zip wires to cross the Del Medio River and waterfalls, all without harming the environment. Canopying or zip-wiring across tree tops in Salta or Iguazu costs about £50.

You can also try surfing on Argentina’s dramatic Atlantic coast, windsurfing on the Nahuel Huapi – one of Argentina’s many beautiful lakes – or kayaking along the Hua Hum or Meliquina rivers.

And if land sailing is more your thing, move inland to El Leoncito to ride a wind-tricycle at thrilling speed across the Barreal plains. Adventurous explorers will want to go mountain biking, climbing and hiking whilst taking in the outstanding scenery of the mountain ranges near the city of Balcarce.

Four-wheel-drive trips around the rocky Tafí River and quad biking through dense forests or mammoth sand dunes close to the shore are a high-octane way of getting your kicks. The salt flats around the Salinas Grandes in Jujuy province provide a breathtaking off-road experience.

Paragliding and hang gliding are both taking off, literally, all over Argentina. Tinogasta has it all, from paragliding and hang gliding to rappelling and sand boarding. Paragliding in Bariloche costs about £20. Sky-diving costs from £30 per jump in Tinogasta.

Diving in stunning Patagonia, at Bariloche or Gallina Island, will satisfy all underwater adventurers. And head for the crystal-clear waters of Nahuel Huapi Lake to experience diving in submerged forests. Mente offers eight-day diving courses for £800.

You can also go horseback riding through the Lake District region of Patagonia or whale watching in Argentina’s premier wildlife spot at Peninsula Valdés. You may have time to take in a polo match, a passionate football encounter, exquisite food and lively Latin beats in Buenos Aires.

There are return flights from London Heathrow to Ushaia Airport from £900, with several airlines flying direct. Many airlines provide return flights from Heathrow to Mendoza, with costs ranging from £800 to over £1000.

If you want several adventure-activity options organised for you, there are some great 16-day compact tours costing about £1800 that include scuba diving and snorkelling, local flights to Salta, accommodation, breakfasts and park fees. Nine-day mountain trekking tours of the Patagonia region bordering Chile, including local flights to Salta, accommodation, breakfasts and park fees are available from £800.
